Why are children aged 12-17 far more likely to be victims of sexual assault than all the other adult age groups?

This Health Canada report explains that Children are more likely to be victims of sexual abuse than adults because they are most vulnerable. 75% of offenders are adults, and even more often the offenders know their victim on a personal level. The report explains that being young and dependant on an adult is a major point of risk. Child victims also tend to be less likely to report their abuser right away or ever because the adult abuser is capable of easily manipulatting a child. Children that are sexually abused tend to grow up with more mental and physical problems than those who have not been, and 40 % of adult sexual abusers have admitted to being sexually assaulted as a child. This ties in to my big question,"Why are children aged 12-17 far more likely to be victims of sexual assault than all other adult age groups?" because they are more vulnerable than adults.
Hey Erika! I really like the way you made your graph so easy to read. Bolding the age group you are focusing was also a great way to show readers what the main focus of the graph is. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Erika! This is heavy topic and you did great on finding the source to answer the question. It's sad to know the reason behind this issue. One thing though, I think it would be better if you use only two colours to highlight the age groups among the rest.

One thing that you could improve on is to order the categories by the ages covered rather than by size, as it is mostly a consistent decrease except for the youngest category which appears out of place as a result.
ReplyDeleteChoosing a bar chart for your data is an excellent choice, and communicates the data very well to your reader. I'd love to see a more detailed title that explicitly points to the most important finding you want us to understand or take away from the data.
